Gym Pet Peeves
So yesterday at the gym, I had set my paperback, $5 actiony-book on the bench at the side while I was lifting weights. I was going to come back not much later and grab it again. And someone took it. I understand not leaving expensive gadgets and all lying around, especially at a gym at school, but the gym I belong to at home is a niceish place. It’s mostly middle-aged people with professional jobs and all that jazz. So why do they steal my $5 book? Really?
Other things that annoy me at the gym:
Cell phones: I don’t care if someone texts or does whatever on their phone. But people get oblivious, especially middle-aged people, when they start talking on the phone. They’ll sit on one piece of equipment for ever. Put your phone away.
Sandals: This doesn’t really annoy me, so much as just kind of make me wonder. Why are you working out in flip-flops? Do yourself a favor and wear shoes.
Putting weights back: This is my big one. I enjoy lifting, a lot, and its really not that hard to put the dumbbells back on the rack in the right spot. This isn’t that big of a problem at home, but at the gyms at SU I can never find the weights I’m looking for.
Not wiping machines down: You just sweat all over that bench/treadmill/bike/mat/whatever. Do us a all a favor, take 30 seconds out of your day, and wipe it down with the wipes they have at one of 10 different dispensers in the gym.
Grunting: Ok, I understand why the guy who is pressing 250 is grunting. But to you, 30-year-old benching the 90 lbs, stop it. You just look like an idiot.
Talking to me in the middle of an exercise: There are some nice people at my gym, and some I talk to whenever I see them. And thats fine when I’m cooling down, or between exercises. But don’t come try to chat me up when I’m in the middle of a press or something.
Old men sitting naked on the locker room bench reading a newspaper: Do that somewhere else. Like at home. Or at least clothed.
